Science homework is generally assigned at the beginning of each week and should be written in the Agenda Book. It will usually consist of a Nature's Eye or a Science Article Write-up. Occasionally it may include a special assignment or studying for a test.
NATURE'S EYE
Each Nature’s Eye should include:
____1. Time for you to observe like a scientist
____2. The date you drew it.
____3. A drawing- puts lots of detail in it!
____4. Add color using colored pencil. Be creative! You are an artist!
____5. Write at least three sentences describing what, where, and when you drew it, or what made you decide to draw it.
SCIENCE ARTICLE WRITE-UPS
My Goals
Middle school students are becoming more interested in the world around them. They want to know about current events in the news. This weekly assignment gives them an opportunity to browse periodicals (newspapers and magazines) for science-related articles. Not only are they researching important science events of today, they are also increasing their exposure to other current events.
Students’ nonfiction reading comprehension and nonfiction writing ability improve through practice. By working with reading material from lots of sources, students will automatically improve these important skills. They will be amazed at how much they have improved!
I would like parents to support each student by providing current periodicals (within the last month, if possible) to cut out or copy. If these aren’t available, the web site[Link] www.sciencenewsforkids.org is a good online source. If articles aren’t available at home, let teachers know so your child can find and print them at school.
Student Work Should Include:
a bibliography:
Title of Article
Name of Periodical
Date of Periodical
2 paragraphs on lined paper-No torn edges please
First paragraph is a summary of the article (advertisements and encyclopedia-type articles don’t count) which contains the main idea(s) and at least three supporting detail sentences. This should be in the student’s own words as much as possible.
Second paragraph states your opinion of the information in the article, using at least three sentences. Back up your opinion with details from the article. This paragraph can also include science questions you have about the article.
The article should be stapled behind your writing.
