Student/Teacher Ratio
The table below reflects the student-teacher ratio by grade. This ratio is figured by dividing the number of students in each grade by the number of teachers. However, calculations to determine the average class sizes do not include special education teachers, who work with students with identified disabilities. Their class sizes and caseloads are determined by state statute and vary greatly depending on the type of student disability. In Kittery, the student-teacher ratio is often the same as class size. In First Grade, for example, the number of students in each class is roughly the same as the student-teacher ratio. However, at Traip Academy, the student-teacher ratio is an average of 16:1 – yet any given class may have between 5 to 27 students in it, depending on the subject and
section. So at Traip, class size may differ greatly from the student-teacher ratio. Over the years, the Kittery School Committee has supported low class sizes, particularly in the early primary grades, where research shows that small classes have an effect on student learning.
