Number Sense Activities
The following are ideas and suggestions for working with your child at home to reinforce mathematical skills. Try not to make it seem like work, just include it in your daily routine!
*Help set the table. Count out 4 forks, 4 spoons, 4 plates, etc.
*Draw 2 flowers, draw 4 faces, draw 3 circles, draw 1 triangle, etc.
* Count crackers for snack, or goldfish, cheerios, etc.
*Make something with 4 blocks. What can you make with 5 blocks?
* Roll a die. Clap that many times, hop that many times, etc.
* Observe...How many circles on a traffic light? What aisle number are we in (when grocery
shopping)?
*Play games such as GO FISH. This is an excellent way to practice identification of numbers. Alter the game to include numbered sets of 0-20.
*Play card games like WAR. This game is good to reinforce which numbers are greater (bigger). Play it differently and have the numbers that are less win the round.
*Pull a number out of a hat and count out that many things (ie. beans) Put the number back and draw a new number to count out.
* Sequence a deck of cards in order (least to greatest, or greatest to least).
*Cut numbers out of sandpaper. Have your child trace the shape of the number while stating what the number is called. The tactile motion of tracing the shape will help to reinforce that specific number's name.
*Practice counting. Count all the red cars you see while driving, count steps as you walk, count out a jar of popcorn kernels, etc.
