Student Work Permit Information
Work Permit Authority
A minor under sixteen (16) years of age may not be employed without a work permit signed by the Superintendent of Schools.
Conditions for Signature
You must be enrolled in school or home-schooled and passing a majority of your courses. When school is in session, you may have only one work permit at any given time. You may have two work permits during summer vacation.
What you need before applying for a work permit:
You must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
You must be at least 14 years old.
You must bring your Social Security Card and Birth Certificate.
You must have assurance from your employer that you will be placed in that job once your work permit is processed.
You must know your job title, address of your employer, phone number of your employer as well as a contact person's name.
What happens after you leave the Superintendent's Office:
Legally you cannot begin your job until you have the work permit in hand.
Your permit is mailed to the Maine Department of Labor in Augusta for processing (usually taking 7-10 business days to process).
When we receive the approved work permit from the Maine Department of Labor, we will call to let you know to pick up the work permit.
You must bring the permit to your employer where it will stay until you resign.

Permits are issued Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
